Emergency Network Maintenance

Upcoming scheduled maintenance notice
Following our latest issues with our core switch in St. Ingbert data center, we have analyzed the available information and log files with the vendor support/engineers.

All of them conclude to a defective memory module within one of the six physical switches, which are part of the core switch virtual-chassis/stack. There is also a concrete hint to a known issue in combination with this physical root cause and a malfunction of the switch software version. This is the reason for the stack to run into overall issues, after the memory issue is triggered.

To solve the actual root cause, we have received a RMA device from the vendor today and will perform an emergency maintenance this Friday, 23.04.2021, 20:00-24:00 UTC.

During this emergency maintenance, we will:
– Shut down the affected switch member
– Disconnect all customer facing cables and inter-switch cabling
– Replace the affected switch member with the new one
– Reconnect inter-switch cabling and reconnect all customer facing cables

We expect your (redundant) connections to this switch member being terminated properly, allowing LACP or STP to intentionally switch over to another physical switch member. This should result in minor package loss and/or minor interruptions of connectivity only.

In general, most of the maintenance time will be consumed by cabling and (de-)mounting work. However, we added some buffer to it, as we can’t really predict the behaviour of the defective switch and want to ensure we have enough time for debugging and confirming the single steps between the changes.

Another (regular) maintenance window might be announced later on to deploy a software update.

Thanks for your understanding and apologies for any inconveniences this may cause.
